7 Make no mistake: God can’t be mocked. What you give is what you get. What you sow, you harvest. 8 Those who sow seeds into their flesh will only harvest destruction from their sinful nature. But those who sow seeds into the Spirit shall harvest everlasting life from the Spirit. 9 May we never tire of doing what is good and right before our Lord because in His season we shall bring in a great harvest if we can just persist. 10 So seize any opportunity the Lord gives you to do good things and be a blessing to everyone, especially those within our faithful family.” Galatians 6:7-10 (The Voice)
Though I come from the land of cattle, crop, and cowboys, I did not grow up around farming. In my little (now fancy) suburb of Dallas, my life was not marked by the harvest season nor was it an expectation to take part in the planting of crops. I am an indoor cat as you all know. So, when I read scripture about sowing seeds and harvesting, I get confused. For you Nebraskans, I am sure that farming is a part of your vernacular. You know how hard it is to plant and toil. You know the anxiety of waiting for rain and what it is like to receive too much. You know the great satisfaction of yielding a good crop. As a church, we are in waiting somewhere among the corn for the right time to participate in God’s harvest as his laborers. It seems like the time as come for us to take a step out of our comfort zone. God has been orchestrating and planning the new sack lunch ministry that we wish to start in January. I hope we can sow seeds of hope and provision in our community by serving our neighbors alongside our sibling congregations. My favorite Christian artist, Scott Erickson, posted something about seeds last month that brought me to tears. He wrote, “There are seeds that are patiently waiting to be planted in you. There is no specific timeline. No deadline to be reached. Only the anticipating of offering the fruit of this harvest as a gift to the world. ‘What are you waiting for’, you ask? A soil ready to receive them. To give them a home into which they can blossom. Your very life is this soil. They are waiting for you to Say Yes to it.”
So seize any opportunity the Lord gives you to do good things and be a blessing to everyone… The crop is almost ready for the harvest. Just persist. God is working.
